A few notes
A quick update
Just two or three things to report from the wide and wonderful world of A Book of Noises at the moment.
If you happen to be in Canterbury on 13 February join me at Waterstones, Rose Lane for a conversation about all things noisy.
The science magazine Nautilius has run four excerpts from the book as What Can We Hear in Space?, The Northern Lights Make Music, What Plants Hear and Could Onomatopoeia Be the Origin of Language?
A Book of Noises is a finalist for a book prize. An announcement comes later in February.
Here are a couple of recommendations of things I think are worth attention.
First, The Art and Science of Tuning, the latest in a series of lectures on the nature of music at Gresham College, Milton Mermikides explores musical tuning across time and culture. “The thing about music is we're not just slaves to [sonic] mechanisms,” he says; “We can learn to appreciate tones and express ourselves within them..."
Second, ‘Add To Playlist’, one of my favourite shows on BBC Radio, is back with a new series. The first episode is an absolute banger, and (in the word of one of the guests) nerdgasm.
